Gallery of Modern Art

Contemporary views of sacred topics

The Gallery of Modern Art was opened in 2013 at Klosterneuburg Abbey. It presents positions in religious art of the 20th and 21st centuries. For hundreds of years the abbey has been committed to the task of commissioning and acquiring works of ecclesiastical art. In recent years, the collection has been beneficially expanded through some bequests and acquisitions. These contemporary works now enter into a fascinating dialogue with those of the classical masters. The spectrum ranges from Expressionist art of the 1920s to creations of young Austrian artists. The new arrivals of the 2015 seasons are paintings of Christ by Gottfried Hula and Alfred Haberpointner, variations on the theme of the Cross by Oskar Höfinger and the photo artist Martin Seidenschwann, as well as works by the artist Gotthard Muhr, long-standing member of the Board of the Vienna Secession, who died in 2013.
